For those that don't know where it is,check the old entrance to Burwash, you'll find it @ the site where Camp "1" used to stand..(NOW WE HAVE TO WORK ON GIVING THE SITE A "PARK" SETTING). Thanks to all the people that made this event "work". Without them, this would not have taken place. Norma Beauchemin for using some of her holidays to make sure that this event was ready on time...."my event partner..." Len Gervais & George Pearson with their experience with previous reunions,always where there to make sure the event went off without a hitch.....thanx to the elders!!! LAST UPDATE - FEB. 23, 2006 Here you'll learn all about my Hometown of Burwash, Ontario, and enjoy some old stories and photos. You would never know it today but Burwash was once a unique correctional facility nestled in the beauty of Northern Ontario. Closed in 1973 and later bulldozed in 1994, it was once an active correctional farm and home to hundreds of families who worked at the facility. Originally called the Burwash Industrial Farm when it was built in 1914, it once housed over 600 inmates by the end of the second world war. It was located a half hour south of Sudbury on 35,000 acres of beautiful farmland, woodland and lakes. The facility at one time was basically self sustaining where the inmates grew produce, raised cattle and hogs. I can't remember when the government actually made it illegal to make inmates work, but they did. Was it something about their human rights? Besides the cell blocks and administrative buildings there were numerous homes, a 20 bed hospital, post office, small shops, dairy barns, corels, a slaughter house, sawmill, an elementary school, laundry facility, cemetary, power generation plant and even a greenhouse.
